How do install lion on a external?
Create a HFS+ partition to it and then simply select it as the target of the install.

To be quite honest, Time Machine leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to error reporting when something goes wrong. I feel your frustration because I had the same problem a few months ago. I've found that looking at the console helps to determine what error occurred and then searching Google to see what the error means, and how to fix it. I think you can find the console in the utilities folder somewhere - can't exactly remember where it is.
My problem with Time Machine was that my disk permissions were screwed up and so it wasn't copying the files nessessary to complete the back up - it would just quit. I would check to see if those were set correctly by going into info and reseting them. Might help.

What's everyone's favorite CMS and what kind of CMS do you have? Recently I've been taking web development more seriously and have been working primarily with Drupal. I really enjoy Wordpress though and find it much easier to teach a client how to use WP3 compared to D7. I've never tried Joomla, and have been seeing what all the fuss is about RoR a couple years late :p.
My next personal project is a niche community site, trying to decide what would be the best fit. I know another drupal developer who has much more experience, but we don't know if it'd be the ideal platform for what we want to create.

I think the shuffles are a great idea for the tournament, and it shows the school is in tune with cool gifts for that age group. Apple refurbs are usualy great products...especially with a shuffle. With solid state flash memory, its either works perfect or it doesn't work at all, so refurb won't matter too much.

I've been a window's user for years and one day I was shopping at Fashion Valley Mall here in San Diego and I stop by the Apple store to check out what thay have to offer and I play around with a Mac Mini using the Mac Osx Tiger software and just love it, so right then and there I bought a Mac Mini computer that day, and that was five months ago and know i'm ready to graduate to a PowerMac G5 computer. I'm plan on buying the G5 for christmas.

I took a 1TB external (the small form factor model from WD), created two partitions on it, then installed Lion on one of the two partitions. It runs remarkably well, albeit just a tad slow in some aspects, but I have no major issues and it even goes to sleep! I was unable to install iStat Menus 2 (the last free version), some of the previously-installed apps from the Mac App Store (installed on my internal HDD), or use iProxy, but I really, really like Lion and can't wait for it to be released.
I ran Geekbench and, while I didn't expect a great score, only scored 3661 on a late-2008 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 6 GB RAM). I'll just put that down to Lion being installed on an external USB2 device.
One thing I really liked was that when you download an app from the Mac App Store, instead of the app being installed in your dock, Launchpad is invoked and the app gets "installed" there.

I'm considering that, but if I were not to have phone functionality, I think I'd be better off with twice the storage. Although the iPhone would have a mail client, I could always just use safari for mail.

I frown upon WoW as well... I just don't see why it is so fun, its expensive, it requires insane amounts of time, its not competitive, it requires no skill...

I have a booq Vyper xs3 sleeve for my 13" MBP. I'd recommend it to anybody. Great protection and not bulky at all.

Just purchased my first mac and have a couple of questions.
1. When I use an external monitor and choose mirroring to show on the external the display is really bad compared to the laptop. How do I fix this, I want the external display to look as crisp as the laptop. Also, I'm using the HDMI adapter. When i go to display properties it shows 1280 x 800 is max I think...Any ideas?
2. Why won't safari pages and itunes go to full display? Does that make sense? All i get is the small pages when you open them up. I see the green button but it dosen't seem to fix my problem.
I'm sure I will have more as I get more into this.
1. As previously mentioned, you're mirroring, which is pretty self explanatory, you're making a mirror image of your computer screen, resolution and all. Tell us how you truly want to use your external display: extended desktop, or as a main screen when at home? We'll be able to tell you more.
2. Because maximizing everything is a very windows-user and useless thing to do, once all the info/text on a page is on screen, any bigger is completely useless and just blocks everything out behind it. Macs are meant to multi-task, and not maximizing helps doing just that. If you truly want to maximize everything for some obscure reason, just drag the bottom right corner and resize the window manually.

Happy New Year, MR.
I'm making a new start and would like to pursue a passion of mine that's been put on the burner for some time now which is music production. Is there a relatively cheap intermediate level USB keyboard that I can get to learn programming music on? I don't want one of those 108 keys that span across my desk but more a mini one. I'm into progressive/deep house music.

I've been a PC user all my life...until yesterday. I just bought my first Mac. Now I want to know if there is any way that I can move my iTunes library from my PC to my PowerBook without having to rip all of my cds again.
I moved the actual song files onto my iPod in hard drive mode and then copied them to my PowerBook, but now my PowerBook will not let me import those songs into iTunes.
Suggestions? Am I SOL?
Actually, you only need to copy your whole library to the iPod's hard drive portion, then drag the entire folder to the iTunes icon on your Mac. iTunes will automatically look for songs to copy and add them to your library as needed.
I moved the actual song files onto my iPod in hard drive mode and then copied them to my PowerBook, but now my PowerBook will not let me import those songs into iTunes.

...americans help me out here there is a store in NY that does electronics.....SNAP just came to me there its called JR Electronics !
Actually there are more than 4 stores in NYC--in manhattan proper, yes just those 4, but staten island has one, i don't think any other borough does yet tho
and beyond those and best buy, save your gas. J and R does not carry the iPad as of yet. accessories only.

Why don't you try one of these many jailbreaks you have "seen online" instead of posting this ridiculous thread, you could even use the search option, I would go as far as to say that it would be front page news on macrumors if it had happened anywhere other than in your imagination!

Thanks for the review. I am really excited about this product and will be getting one when i get an iPod Photo for sure. I have a question that I have not heard anywhere. Does the Camera Connector support USB 2 with cameras that support it, or is it strictly USB 1.1? If it did USB 2 that would be awesome. I will probably buy it either way, but just curious.

I did what parapup suggested.
I went with OWC with their data doubler combo which was the 128SSD (115 usable) with the optibay for 279. I then bought the optical drive housing for 24 from max upgrades total around 310.
Its about what I wanted to spend and hopefully I'll only use the HD for data storage.
Stupid question, will the OSX install disc boot from the external drive or do I need to replace my main HD, then install osx, then replace the optical drive?
also, time machine will have no trouble right?
